Confession: I’m not the girl who wants big, clusters of thick lashes that turn my eyes into enormous, shellacked spiders. Most days, I just want to give my eyelashes an added volume boost without veering into RuPaul’s Drag Race territory. (Not that I don’t appreciate the makeup on that show. I am in awe of it and just slightly intimidated at the same time).
But it’s not just about the easy application or the flake-free formula—my appreciation for both the product and the brand go much deeper than that. Here are the many other reasons why I’m a Tarte Big Ego Mascara fan—and why you’ll be one, too.
It’s a Cinch to Build Bolder Lashes
Yes, I know what I said before about preferring a more natural look for my eyelashes. But there are obviously moments when a girl needs more. By adding three coats, you can bulk up fine lashes and build a bolder look in just a few strokes.
It’s so effortless to lengthen, volumize, and curl thanks to the applicator booster brush. Similar to the curve of your lash line, it adds volume from the root to tip. If you look closely, you’ll notice twisted double fibers that deliver maximum pigment without clumps, smudges, or flakes.
Apply it as you would your usual mascara: Just swoop the brush in a zigzag motion, starting at the base of lashes and stroke them through to the tip. The more you layer the bigger the drama!
This Mascara is Easy on Your Eyes
It’s not always easy to find a mascara that delivers oomph while still adhering to a vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic, dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested, and contact safe formula. This mascara doesn’t contain irritants or allergens like parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, or gluten.
I’m happy to report that after wearing Tarte’s Big Ego Mascaraall day long and into the night, my sensitive peepers weren’t the least bit dry, itchy, or irritated.
Mascara Chocked Full of Natural Ingredients
Some mascaras make my lashes feel dry and brittle. Not so with this one! Like other Tarte products, Big Ego Mascara contains Babassu, a clear light-yellow vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the Babassu palm, to nourish hair and to keep lashes lush while natural sunflower seed wax thickens and conditions without making things clumpy. Hydrating glycerin and moisturizing panthenol (vitamin b5) are other superheroes that strengthen lashes as they build them.
As for ethics, Tarte has long been a cruelty-free makeup brand, and this particular formula is vegan. The brand doesn’t not test on animals and is certified by PETA.
It’s The Mascara Brand You Can Admire
Tarte may not have been on your radar until more recently, but this OG makeup company has been around for almost 20 years. Founder and CEO Maureen Kelly dropped out of a PhD program in psychology at Columbia University to work on a line of tinted cheek stains in 1999. “I was really frustrated that makeup lines on the market at the time were so focused on makeup artists rather than real women like me,” she explained to one interviewer. So she made her own easy-to-use products out of her New York City apartment and launched the brand at Henri Bendel in 2000.
While cruelty-free formulas and a focus on natural ingredients has grown in popularity, Kelly was a pioneer in this space. She focused on naturally derived ingredients (including the not yet popular acai berry) and made sure parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gluten were not included in her products long before other brands had it on their radars.
Clearly, I’m not alone in my experience and my devotion to this mascara. Charmers everywhere are chiming in with high praise for Tarte’s Big Ego Mascara. Here’s what they’re saying.
“This is by far the best mascara I have ever used. I will definitely continue to buy this product and I would have never tried it or known until I got in my box..I love it!”
“I love Tarte mascara and this is definitely a new favorite. It goes on even with no clumps and lasts all day without flaking.”
“Love everything Tarte and this is no exception. Long lasting and doesn’t smudge off by the end of the day.”
“It’s not thick, which I love. It gives a natural boost to lashes! Once it dries, you can apply another layer for thicker lashes, that don’t look false!”
