Keeping your hair healthy while staying at home can either be a hit or miss depending on the information you have. Fortunately, we have a little black book full of haircare experts who are willing to share industry secrets, and the best tips for maintaining healthy locks. BoxyCharm caught up with Moroccanoil’s Artistic Director, Kevin Hughes, and he dished on the best at-home hair tips, tricks, and treatments you should be doing yourself. Here’s what he had to say:

What tips would you recommend on maintaining colored or processed hair while at home?

“I think one of the most important things you could do is use a hydrating hair mask once a week. I love the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask for this – it restores the shine back into your hair while keeping it in optimum condition.

Another helpful tip, if you are not going out, let your hair air dry. The less hot tools you use the better off your hair will be. Less hot tools and less sun exposure will be sure to keep you color looking fresh longer.”

What is one major mistake people make when coloring their own hair?

“They choose a color that is too dark or too light. If you can’t stand looking at your roots, try ordering a temporary root touch up or concealer, there are many on the market, they wash out of the hair and you won’t have to spend a ton of money to fix your botched color job when you return to your stylist.”

How should we be caring for hair overnight?

“If you have long hair or extensions, try braiding your hair in a loose 3-strand braid. This keeps the hair contained and from getting matted or tangled throughout your sleep. Another great idea is a silk pillowcase, women used to use them all the time, when ladies were getting their hair done once a week. It still applies today, if you aren’t shampooing your hair every day, then you want to keep your hair from tangling during sleep.”

What should we know about cutting our own split ends?

“I don’t recommend cutting your hair at home, I believe in going to your stylist for that. In these times, people get antsy, so they may do it anyway. So best practice is to use very sharp shears, designed for haircutting, don’t ever use fabric scissors. Also, the key is to take very little [off], you don’t have to take a lot of hair off to see a big difference in the health and look of your hair, just take a small amount off, you can always take more, but you can’t put it back after it’s cut.”

What is a great DIY hair mask to combat dry and damaged hair?

“I love this mask to instantly breathe new life back into your hair.”

2 Tbsp virgin organic coconut oil, place in microwave for 20 seconds

1 Tbsp honey

2 Tbsp Moroccanoil Treatment or Moroccanoil Pure Argan Oil

“Combine together and work into hair from mid-lengths to end, the most damaged area of everyone’s hair, then work it up to the root area. Place a shower cap on and let sit for 30 mins, shampoo mask out of hair and use your favorite conditioner.”

Explain the benefits of a scalp scrub?

“Healthy scalp equals healthy hair, so taking care of your scalp is very important. Many people don’t know that a vigorous massage, whenever you are shampooing your hair, is important to keep blood flow and invigorate the scalp and hair follicles. A scrub can be done once a month, it is not necessary to do it more often than that. This is used to remove product buildup, unclog follicles that may be blocked from products that people use every day; like dry shampoo. It will also help remove dead skin or dry flaky scalp and promote circulation to the scalp.”

Best advice for healthy hair growth?

“A few of my favorite and super easy tips below:”

Be sure to get a trim at least every 8 weeks, even if it is a very small amount, it helps to keep hair from splitting at the ends.

Try brushing your hair every morning or night, be sure to brush all the way down to the ends, this helps to invigorate the scalp as well as move your natural oils down the hair shaft.

Eat well, because a bad diet can show up through your hair.

When detangling your hair out of the shower, add a product to detangle the hair, like Moroccanoil Treatment to the hair before you even bring a brush to it, this helps to detangle and get through the hair easier.

“If you are going to use heat styling tools on your hair, be sure to use a Heat protectant, like Moroccanoil Perfect Defense, add it to your hair before you even blow dry, so you get the protection throughout the whole process.”

How should we maintain hair extensions while staying at home?

“I think if you have extensions you should own a silk pillowcase to cut down tremendously on extensions tangling while you sleep. Be sure to avoid shampoos with sulfates or high alcohol content, as this dries the hair out or pulls color. You should also be using a brush that is made for hair extensions and be sure to brush through your extensions regularly, this will cut down on any tangling.”

What temperature range should hair tools be on in order to preserve hair health?

“Keep your hot tools below 390 degrees, this is so important for the health of your hair and use a heat protectant.”
